Hussain Al-Yafai is the Chief Executive Officer, Managing Director, and Head of Coverage at Standard Chartered Bank Oman, a position he has held since 2019. With more than two decades of experience across banking, financial markets, business strategy, and transformation, he has played a significant role in strengthening the bank’s corporate and institutional banking presence in Oman.

In his current role, Al-Yafai oversees business operations, regulatory compliance, risk management, capital allocation, and administration, while leading a team of professionals and maintaining relationships with government entities, financial institutions, government-related entities, and multinational corporations.

Driving Sustainable Finance in Oman

Al-Yafai has been a prominent contributor to the development of sustainable finance in Oman. Under his leadership, Standard Chartered established the country’s first sustainability-linked financing and developed a strong position in ESG advisory and sustainable finance.

He also played a central role in the development of Oman’s Sustainable Finance Framework, supporting the country’s broader efforts to integrate sustainability into financial markets and national economic priorities.

Financing Oman’s Economic Development

Throughout his career at Standard Chartered, Al-Yafai has been involved in major financing activities supporting Oman’s economic development. His profile states that he has arranged more than USD 80 billion in financing for Oman across debt capital markets, syndicated lending, and structured funding.

Previously, as Head of Wholesale Banking in Oman, he achieved more than USD 60 billion in funding through 40 transactions, spanning debt capital markets, syndicated loans, ECA financing, and product financing.

Regional Banking Leadership

Since joining Standard Chartered in 2005, Al-Yafai has held several senior positions, including Co-Head of Debt Capital Markets for MENAP and Regional Business Planning Manager for Financial Markets. As Co-Head of Debt Capital Markets, he managed more than USD 20 billion in annual deal flow and led high-profile transactions across the MENA region.

His earlier career included international leadership exposure through A.P. Moller–Maersk, including assignments and projects across Europe and Asia.

Recognition and Board Leadership

Al-Yafai’s contributions have received recognition in Oman, including more than ten letters of appreciation from the Omani government, according to his professional profile. He has also been named among Oman’s 100 Most Influential CEOs and recognized through IBF Skills Badges in Sustainable Finance.

Beyond his executive role, he serves as a Board Director at OQ SAOC, Oman Food Bank (Daymah), and the Oman British Friendship Association Society. He is also a member of the Oman Banks Association and Young Presidents’ Organization.

Education and Executive Development

Al-Yafai studied Business and Banking at the University of St. Thomas and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the American University in Dubai. He also completed executive education in Behavioural Finance at INSEAD.
